Healthy life expectancy decreased in 2022 compared to the previous year, although it has been increasing since 2008. At age 65, women can expect to live 11.8 years without disability, and men 10 .2 years, according to a Drees study.
In France, life expectancy at birth is steadily increasing, despite the impact of Covid-19. The study notes “very uneven developments” due to Covid-19: after stagnation in 2020, disability-free life expectancy increased sharply in 2021 before falling in 2022.
Drees emphasizes that these additional years of life are not all necessarily lived “in good health”. Life expectancy without disability at age 65 has increased since 2008 by one year and 9 months for women, and by one year and six months for men.
In 2021, France was ranked fourth in the EU of 27 for disability-free life expectancy for men at age 65, and third for women, both above the European average.
